Being a new blogger can be tough. I have clients come to me all the time and ask about the basics of blog posts. They are afraid to make a mistake. Here is a secret. Blogging is all about trial and error. Tweaking and changing. Finding what your readers want to read.

My rule of Thumb is:  Don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing. Write what your readers want to read and what you know.

But I also know that some tips are in order here too!  So in no particular order here are my 8 tips to building better blog posts for your readers.

  1. Be Real!  Your readers want to hear you – your thoughts, feelings and personality.  Loosen up and be real.
  2. Keep your sentences short, to the point and flowing.  It is hard to read a lot of copy on the internet, so allow for easy reading with white space to help get through the posts.
  3. Rock your title.  Many professional writers spend the most time on their title. It draws in the interest from your readers
  4. Use bullets and list format for easy scanning. Readers love lists!
  5. Use SEO but don’t be tied to it.  Be true to you first and if the seo works into it, awesome. If not, your next post might work better for your seo.
  6. SubHeadings help break up the flow of the post plus allow easy transitions. They also tell the reader what is coming up.
  7. Images, video and other multi media is a must. They make your post interesting, pinnable and sharable on social sites.
  8. Remember your readers come first. Serving your followers and readers is the only way to make your posts interesting and keep them coming back for more.

Remember that there are no wrong posts. The more you write, the more you will learn to grow and create. Use these tips to help you build a better blog post and in turn your readers will appreciate your blog.
